Ubud vs Canggu: The Quick Answer

Choose Ubud if you want rice terraces, jungle views, culture and quiet. Choose Canggu if you want surf, beach clubs, cafés and coworking spaces. Ubud is inland and calm. Canggu is on the coast and busy. If you have a week or more, split your stay between them.
Both places are in Bali, but they feel like different trips. Trioffe Hospitality, a hotel advisory firm based in Indonesia, has reviewed boutique hotels in both. Its guides are where to stay in Canggu and the best boutique hotels in Ubud. This article compares the two so you can choose a base, then points you to hotels in each.

Ubud vs Canggu: How the Two Compare

The differences show up in five places: the atmosphere, the beach, the food, the traffic and the price. Here is how each one plays out.
Atmosphere and Nightlife

Ubud is built around culture and nature. The palace, the market and the Monkey Forest sit in the centre, and the best hotels look over jungle gorges and rice terraces. Evenings are quiet. Dinner is the main event.
Canggu is social. Batu Bolong has the cafés, boutiques and bars. Berawa has the big beach clubs. Echo Beach has sunset drinks above the surf. Nightlife exists, but it is a beach-bar scene, not a club district.
Beaches and Surf

Ubud has no beach. The nearest sea is about an hour or more away by car. Canggu has several. Echo Beach and Batu Bolong have reef and beach breaks with demanding waves, and they are surf beaches, not swimming beaches. Weak swimmers should stick to hotel pools, according to Trioffe's Canggu guide. Sanur and Nusa Dua have calmer water.
Food and Cafés

Both have more variety than any other part of Bali. In Ubud, warungs serve nasi campur (rice with side dishes), babi guling (roast suckling pig) and sate lilit, a minced-meat satay on lemongrass sticks. A warung meal in Bali costs about US$2 to 5, according to Trioffe's Lombok vs Bali comparison. Canggu is the café capital. You will find coffee roasters, brunch spots and Franco-Australian bistros on the lanes of Pererenan.
Traffic and Getting Around

Canggu's traffic is the main complaint. The Berawa Shortcut can add 10 to 20 minutes to a short trip, and a two-kilometre hop can take 40 minutes in rain. Only Batu Bolong is walkable. A scooter costs about US$6 to 12 a day in Canggu.
Ubud's centre is walkable, but the best hotels are 10 to 45 minutes away by car. Grab and Gojek work in both places.
Cost

Hotel prices overlap. In Ubud, a village guesthouse starts at about US$40, a design hotel near the centre is around US$205 and a jungle resort runs US$240 to 550. In Canggu, a simple guesthouse starts at about US$30, a mid-range four-star is around US$110 and a beachfront five-star is US$165 to 270. Prices are "from" rates seen on booking sites in late 2026.
Where to Stay in Canggu

Canggu is not one neighbourhood. The area you choose decides whether you walk to dinner or sit on a scooter in the rain.
Batu Bolong: The Walkable Heart

Batu Bolong has the cafés, spas and bars around Old Man's and The Lawn. It is the only part of Canggu you can do on foot, which makes it the noisiest and most built up.
Hotel Tugu Bali sits on the beach, from about US$220. It is part hotel and part museum, with the Tugu family's collection of Indonesian antiques in every pavilion. The Slow is the design and nightlife pick, from about US$145 to 190, with no shared pool. Serenity Eco Guesthouse & Yoga is the budget choice, from about US$30 to 35 including breakfast.
Berawa: Grown-Up Canggu

Berawa has the big beach clubs, leafy villa lanes and coworking spaces. It works for families, couples and remote workers. The Shortcut road is permanently clogged. Swarga Suites Berawa is the only beachfront address in the area at its price, from about US$110.
Echo Beach: For Surfers

Echo Beach has the serious waves and beachfront cafés. The nightlife ends with sundowners. COMO Uma Canggu is the one true five-star on this coast, with a kids' club for ages 4 to 12 and a surf school. Rooms cost about US$165 to 270.
Pererenan: The Rising Quarter

Pererenan has rice fields, galleries and a quieter beach. Further Hotel is spread across four village sites with a rooftop pool, from about US$170 to 190. Shore Amora is the mid-range pick, from about US$110. Tribal Bali is a coworking hostel for remote workers on a budget.
Seseh and Cemagi: Retreat Country

These areas are 20 minutes out, with black-sand beaches, temples in the paddies and isolated villas. There is no nightlife and the lanes are unlit after dark.
Where to Stay in Ubud

Ubud is a group of villages, not a single town. The first decision is where, not which hotel. The area guide below follows Trioffe's Ubud hotel guide.
Central Ubud: Walk to Everything

The centre, around Jl. Bisma, Kajeng, Hanoman and Monkey Forest Road, puts the palace, the market and the Monkey Forest on foot. The cost is traffic and noise. 11 on Kajeng has five villas behind carved doors, from about US$125 to 250. Bisma Eight, 800 m from the centre, has a Michelin Key, a deep soaking tub in every suite and an infinity pool over the treetops, from about US$205.
Nyuh Kuning and Penestanan: Quiet Village Lanes
Nyuh Kuning and Pengosekan sit just south of the Monkey Forest, 15 to 20 minutes' walk from town. They suit families and long stays. Alam Indah costs about US$40 to 150. Penestanan, on the hill to the west, is the yoga and café quarter. The Sungu Resort & Spa costs about US$40 to 100.
Sayan and Payangan: Jungle Views

Sayan and Kedewatan line the Ayung gorge, where the famous jungle views and the big luxury names are. These are not walkable. Bambu Indah, an eco-estate with spring-fed natural pools, costs from about US$215. The Kayon Jungle Resort in Payangan is adults-only, with no guests under 15, and costs from about US$240.
Tegallalang: Rice Terrace Country

Tegallalang and Keliki sit about 25 minutes north of the centre. Natya Resort has a circular infinity pool over the jungle and private-pool villas from about US$230. Capella Ubud is the ultra-luxury choice at about US$1,100 to 1,600 a night.

Best Time to Visit Ubud and Canggu

Both areas share Bali's dry season, which runs from April to October. June to September is the most reliable stretch, and July and August give the most consistent surf in Canggu.
| Months | Weather | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| April to May | Dry, warm | Quieter and cheaper |
| June to September | Driest | Safe bet for both areas |
| October | Dry, last of the season | Quieter and cheaper |
| November to March | Wet, short heavy showers | Litter washes onto Canggu beaches in December and January |
| Late December | Wet | Prices spike for Christmas and New Year |
| March | Varies | Nyepi, the Day of Silence, shuts the whole island for 24 hours |
Ubud sits higher than the coast. Expect 27 to 30 °C by day and a pleasant 20 to 23 °C at night. Nyepi is every March. The airport closes too, so do not plan to travel on that day. Bali also charges a tourist levy of IDR 150,000 per foreign visitor, paid once through the official portal before you fly. For wider background, see Bali on Wikipedia.
Getting There and Getting Around

Neither place is close to the airport in practice.
From Ngurah Rai Airport

Ubud is about 37 km from the airport. Allow 1 hour 30 minutes, often more with traffic. Canggu is 17 to 25 km away, but the trip takes 45 to 90 minutes in normal traffic. Between 3 pm and 7 pm it can take 75 to 100 minutes, and sometimes over two hours in rain or during ceremonies. Late-night arrivals from 9 pm to 1 am are the fastest, at 40 to 55 minutes. The airport taxi counter charges a fixed US$25 to 40 for Canggu, and hotel transfers cost about the same.
Between the Two
Ubud to Canggu is about 1 to 1.5 hours by car, depending on the traffic. Hire a driver for the day or use a ride-hailing app.
Mistakes to Avoid
- Booking a jungle hotel without a car. Payangan and Tegallalang hotels are far from town, and the last shuttle can leave by 7 pm.
- Expecting a swimming beach in Canggu. The waves are strong.
- Landing in the afternoon. The 3 pm to 7 pm traffic can double the trip to Canggu.
- Skipping the tourist levy. Keep your QR code ready.
- Booking for Nyepi. The island is shut for 24 hours in March.
Can You Do Both? A Split-Stay Plan

You do not have to choose. Six or seven nights split cleanly, and you avoid the long cross-island drive more than once.
The 3 + 3 Plan

Start in Ubud for three nights. Arrive, rest and walk the centre on day one. On day two, visit the rice terraces and a jungle waterfall. On day three, add a spa or a cooking class. Many Ubud hotels run a free shuttle into town.
Then move to Canggu for three nights. Surf or watch the waves in the morning, work or relax by a pool in the afternoon and catch the sunset at a beach club. If you fly out the same week, ending on the coast keeps the airport trip shorter than leaving from Ubud.
Which Order Works Best

Go Ubud first if you land tired. Hotels there are calm, and the first night is easy. Go Canggu first if you need a fast transfer and want to start with a beach.
If You Have Only Four Nights

Pick one. Choose Ubud for culture and quiet, or Canggu for surf and sunsets. A day trip between them is possible, but you will spend a few hours on the road.
